Get the Right Computer for Your Major

Always at our Education Prices!

Laptops by Major is a program developed by RamTech, in collaboration with academic departments at URI. The program is designed to provide every student with an appropriate and accurate computer recommendation based on his or her major. The University of Rhode Island has certain global computer recommendations and certain departments have more specific requirements. Our knowledgeable and friendly associates are here to serve you so please feel free to contact us if you have any questions - [email protected] or (401) 874-2679.

Simply select your College below to get started. If you're not sure, send us an email [email protected] or give us a call at or (401) 874-2679 and our staff can help you find the right computer for your major and personal needs. Want more choices? View all of our Dell or Apple products.

You can choose to ship your order now, pick it up in store, or reserve your computer for pickup the week before classes during the same time as textbook pickup. If you choose to reserve your computer for pickup the week before classes start, your order will be updated automatically with the latest model should updates occur or if the price of your computer goes down!

  • The College of Engineering at URI does not have any recommended systems for engineers on their laptops. The primary recommendation is to continue to use the systems you are currently comfortable using. The College does not require students to use any particular software on their own, but in general, the following things are useful: Microsoft Excel (or an equivalent), Matlab and Solidworks. All of those are available on College lab computers, so don't run out and buy them until you are certain you need them! Microsoft Office and Matlab are available through the University, but both can be accessed in an online version. The focus for incoming students is a good web browser (for library searches and Brightspace, our online course system) and a word processing and spreadsheet program. Beyond that, requirements become program specific and students will have time in their first year to learn what they need.
  • During the COVID-19 emergency, the most important technical thing for students to have is a good Wifi connection and a computer that can run remote video. (Zoom, Netflix, YouTube are examples. If it can run those, new students should be fine. URI uses Webex, which can be run in a wide variety of machines.) Engineering software will be available using a remote access tool through a web browser during this time.
  • Basic specifications are as follows:
    - Any Mac is fine.
    - PC should have at least 8GB of RAM and be an i3 (preferably i5) processor (or equivalent) as recent as you can get. If easily attained, an SSD drive is recommended.
    - Linux box: if you know what you are doing, you are fine.
    - Chromebooks: These won't be able to run something like SolidWorks, but should be fine as a general purpose computer, including connecting to our virtual system.
